Bitumen

What is Bitumen

Bitumen is a non-crystalline viscous material, black or dark brown in color, which is substantially soluble in carbon di-supplied (CS2), possessing adhesive and water proofing qualities. It consists essentially of highly condensed polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and would typically comprise of at least 80% carbon and 15% hydrogen, the remainder being oxygen, Sulphur, nitrogen and traces of various metals. Bitumen’s key characteristics of adhesion, cohesion and viscosity make it ideal for uses in many industrial sectors where its durability and workability also provides significant advantages.

 Bitumen production

 Of the wide variety of crude oils commercially available, only a limited number are considered suitable for producing bitumen of the required quality in commercial quantities. In general, these are heavy crude oils with high Sulphur content.

In modern, integrated refineries, it is common practice to blend multiple crude oils to produce consistent quality high grade bitumen that meets precise engineering specifications.

Production processes

Residues from the distillation of meticulously selected crude oils provide the base materials for bitumen production. Bitumen refining separates the lighter fractions from the residues. Several manufacturing methods are used to produce specification bitumen depending on the crude source and processing capabilities available. Often a combination of processes is selected. The illustration shows a compilation of the main refinery processes employed.

Distillation

The most common refining process is straight reduction from crude or a crude blend, using atmospheric and vacuum distillation. In the diagram, atmospheric distillation is used to separate lighter petrochemical and fuel fractions from the non-boiling component at the bottom, known as an atmospheric residue. The lighter fractions, such as gas oil and fuel oils are fed to other refinery units. The atmospheric residue is retained for bitumen. To remove the last traces of the lighter fractions and avoid heat transformation of the molecules, the atmospheric residue is introduced into a vacuum distillation unit, here the pressure reduction lowers boiling temperatures and unwanted thermal cracking of the molecules can be avoided.

Solvent de-asphalting

Specific solvents can also be used to separate the lubricant and bitumen components of crude, without damaging their chemical structure. According to the solvent used – propane or butane – different categories of bitumen can be obtained. Along with finely controlled variations in the vacuum distillation process, these processes permit the production of bitumen with varying levels of penetration. This property and the softening point are the two fundamental defining characteristics of bitumen produced to engineering specifications. Further key physical properties are sensitivity to temperature and ageing, cohesion and elasticity, all of which are measured by precise tests.

Oxidation

Bitumen can be further processed by blowing air through it at elevated temperatures (280°C on average) to alter its physical properties for commercial applications.

Oxidized bitumen covers two distinct types depending on the degree of oxidation: air rectified and oxidized. Oxidized bitumen has a distinctive consistency at room temperature and a rubbery nature which affects how it responds to stress, or imprint. The process of oxidation increases the stiffness and softening point of the bitumen and considerably alters key physical properties. Varying the length of the oxidation or air blowing process varies the extent of the reaction and produces distinctive end products. Oxidized bitumen is used in roofing applications, while air rectified bitumen is used in paving applications and some roofing applications.

Blending

The final bitumen product can be produced to technical specification either directly in the refining process or by blending bitumen with different physical properties. Blending of higher and lower viscosity residues in the required proportions may take place at the refinery, at terminals or at a third party facility, where blend components and finished products can be easily transported and distributed for use.

Polybag & Jumbo Bag Packaging

Bitumen Polybags have a great advantage over those of old traditional Iron Drums. By use these bags the  wastage of bitumen and that iron drum is prevented.

Comparing with traditional bitumen bucket, it has many advantages:

1. The bag is designed to melt along with the bitumen to form a homogeneous mass at a temperature between 160 and 170 Centigrade, without leaving any unmelted or partially materials.

2. The temperature of the molten bitumen pouring into the bag is 120~140 Centigrade.

3. The bag produces no pollution, and there is no package waste at the end-use.

4. No residual bitumen waste during the end-use.

5. To be Easy for shipping and storing.

6. Much more cheaply than steel drum packing.

Description: Fusible bitumen bag is made of specific and unique poly-alkene compound. Comparing with steel drum and Kraft paper package, it’s not only durable but also can be melted with the bitumen.

Overall features & benefits: Melt Activator As the end use with the bitumen at melted temperature 160º C~170º C, the Fusible Bitumen bag is not the polluted element but a good melt activator.

Save the Cooling time No need to wait for hours even one night, no need to be stored on numbers of shelves, only need 1 hour’s refrigeration in water.

Abide High Temperature The Fusible Bitumen bag is found to be capable of withstanding temperature at 130º C± 10º C in the bitumen-filling process. So the high temperature cannot affect the bitumen’s transportation and storage.

Economical 1) Innocuous and harmless bag, environment protection. 2) No any waste of bitumen with the Fusible Bitumen bag, instead of problems on how to remove remained bitumen from steel drum and how to deal with the broken Kraft paper. 3) Saving more time and costs on bitumen packing, transport as well as other labor force.

Application: The filling temperature should be ≤140 º C for the road bitumen. The working house temperature for use should be ≥ 8 º C. Both the poly and woven bags could be melted completely at 160º C–170º C, while the machine stirred about 20_30 minutes, If in 20minutes, it means the inner bag could be melted completely at 160º C–165º C only. In summer, this bag could be piled up at most for 5_6 layers. In winter, it could be piled up for 6_7 layers. Avoid piling too much to affect the quality of bag. The elongation at break is ≥250%.
